Praying for Leaders with Purpose

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all in authority, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior. 1 Timothy 2:1-4

Paul gives us the ‘why’ of our praying for our leaders: that we might lead a quiet and peaceable life. That’s a worthy goal, isn’t it, to have a life free of turmoil and conflict? And scripture indicates that our prayers for our leaders have an effect on our daily lives. Your prayers and mine make a difference for decision makers and those who carry responsibility for the well-being of a city or state or business or church family.

We are to pray for our political leaders regardless of party affiliation. We are to pray for cultural leaders such as influencers, policy makers, and business owners. We are to pray for those who lead the church, both its local expression and the church in the city at large.

Micah 6:8 helps shape our praying. “What does the Lord require of you, o man, but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before thy God.”

Let’s pray that those who lead us govern honestly, govern humanely, and govern in meekness. Pray that each comes to a knowledge of the truth to be saved. Pray for their health and for their families. Let’s ask God to show us how we may serve them and do so with the grace of Christ.

Take time to make note of your leaders. Write their names. Commit to pray for them and their families. Make an effort to express your appreciation for them.
